What's Being Said

”The transfer application process has been one of the most stressful moments of my life. I wasn’t sure how to write my personal statement. I didn’t have a list of schools where I really wanted to go. I didn’t know how to answer so many questions for so many schools in such a short time. Having Emily as a mentor for this process made all the difference. She showed me sample student essays. We analyzed them together, highlighting the good practices I should apply to my own answers. She gave me the resources to choose the best schools to apply. She patiently revised each of my essays, pointing to cliches, undeveloped ideas, superficial topics and, of course, grammar mistakes. It took me a long time to write the essay for my common app, but when I wrote it, Emily and I both agreed that that was it, that was ‘the one.’ Emily was always there for me, even late at night when I sent her last minute changes for an essay due at midnight. She always told me her true opinions about my essays. I really appreciate every comment, even the not-so-nice one, specially those. Thanks to Emily, I am a better writer today. There is no one better suited to guide the students through the application process."

"There's no better place to write on campus than Emily Sendin's office. She's typing at her desktop furiously only to pause for a few mins to pantomime the sentence she just wrote, and she's writing another professor about looking at my personal statement to help me out. Meanwhile, her thoughts run 10 miles a minute, thinking about 20 other approaches to help her students (in this case, me) get where they want to go. I'm sitting on a cushion, in a room lit subtly, just enough for concentration and nowhere near headache beams. She notices I'm not doing my own typing and instantly makes a face, suggesting I get back to work. Because I know what's good for me, I put my attention back on my laptop and reread the same common app prompt for the 14th time of the hour. Instantly, our furious typing is in sync. This was everyday for a whole semester: a life of perfecting my discipline and shaping the story behind me -- the student, activist, writer, and woman.
In true motherly nature, she guides. In true educator nature, she promotes leadership. Writing is her artistry, and any student would be lucky to inherit half of her ambition or intelligence. I'm proud to say that, under her guidance, midnight poetry has won state-wide awards and weeks of work put me on the radar of national universities. Not only have I shaped the story so far but I also glimpsed at the possibilities for it to continue."

"I can tell you from experience that the transfer process is something that is overwhelming, time consuming, and somewhat frightening. Professor Sendin was there with me every step of the way to ensure a smooth transition to an institute of higher education. She was not only a professor but also a friend, offering advice that constantly helped my application for the better. Through all the late-night emails, online submissions, and talks during office hours, Professor Sendin made sure my application was as close to perfect as one could imagine. Without Professor Sendin, I would not have been accepted to eight out of ten universities I applied to and awarded five out of five scholarships I applied for. To me, she is more than just a professor, she is an inspiration, a friend, and a mentor."
